“You can only be you when you do your best. When you don’t do your best you are denying yourself the right to be you.” ~ Don Miguel Ruiz
If someone handed you a practical guide to personal freedom and told you that following a few simple principles could dramatically improve your life, would you be willing to try it?
I know I would.
In fact, that's one of the reasons I was so drawn to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz when I first read it years ago. It's a simple book with a powerful message. And although there are countless personal growth books out there, very few have had the lasting impact that this one has because it’s simple to remember the key ideas, and if you follow them… so very powerful.
Recently, I found myself thinking about it again. Actually, that's not entirely true...
It feels more like the book has been calling to me from my bookshelf.
Maybe it's because of the world we're living in right now. It seems like everywhere I look, I see people carrying around unnecessary stress, frustration, resentment, and disappointment. People feeling stuck. People feeling powerless. People trapped by limiting beliefs, destructive habits, and stories they've been telling themselves for years.
And if I'm being completely honest, there have been moments in my own life where I've fallen into those traps too.
Haven't we all?
That's why I wanted to revisit these ideas with you.
Not because I think any book has all the answers, but because sometimes a simple reminder can create a powerful shift.
And that's exactly what these four agreements have the potential to do.
What If Freedom Is Simpler Than We Think?
When most people think about freedom, they think about external circumstances.
More time. More money. More opportunities. More choices.
But what if the greatest barriers to freedom aren't outside of us at all?
What if they're the beliefs we hold, the stories we tell ourselves, and the habits of thinking that keep us stuck?
That's why I love the simplicity of these four agreements.
They aren't complicated.
They don't require special skills, advanced degrees, or years of study.
They're simple practices that can help us think differently, respond differently, and ultimately live differently.
The Four Agreements are:
Simple?
Absolutely.
Easy?
Not always.
But often the most transformative ideas are also the simplest.
Small Agreements. Big Impact.
As I look back over my own life and coaching practice, I've noticed that many of our struggles can be traced back to violating one or more of these principles.
We speak harshly to ourselves.
We take things personally that were never about us.
We make assumptions instead of seeking understanding.
And we hold ourselves to impossible standards instead of simply doing our best.
Sound familiar?
The good news is that awareness creates choice.
And once you're aware of these patterns, you can begin changing them.
That's where freedom begins.
Not all at once.
Not overnight.
But one thought, one choice, and one agreement at a time.
Your Challenge This Week
Over the next few weeks, we're going to take a deeper look at each of these agreements and how they can help you create greater peace, confidence, and freedom in your life.
For now, I'd encourage you to write them down somewhere you'll see them regularly.
Put them on a sticky note. Add them to your planner. Save them on your phone. Whatever works for you. (Sound familiar? You can put them by your character list from last week.)
Then simply begin noticing: Notice when you're practicing them. Notice when you're not.
No judgment - Just awareness.
Because awareness is always the first step toward change.
And who knows?
You may discover that the freedom you've been searching for has been available to you all along.
It was simply waiting for a new agreement.
If you've never read The Four Agreements, I highly recommend it. And if you have read it before, perhaps this is your reminder to revisit it with fresh eyes. Sometimes the lessons we need most are the ones we've heard before, but are finally ready to live.
