“Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.” ~ Don Miguel Ruiz
Last week, I introduced you to The Four Agreements and challenged you to begin paying attention to how often you were (or weren't) living by them. This week, we're diving into the first agreement: Be Impeccable with Your Word.
At first glance, most people assume this agreement is about how we speak to others. They think about honesty, integrity, gossip, keeping promises, and speaking truthfully. And while it certainly includes those things, I think there's an even more important place to apply this agreement.
The way you speak to yourself!
Take a moment and really think about that.
Would you consider yourself a positive, encouraging, compassionate person? Do you try to lift others up instead of tearing them down? Do you value honesty and integrity?
Most people would answer yes.
But now let me ask you a different question…
Do you speak to yourself with that same level of kindness, compassion, and integrity?
Because if you're anything like most people, the answer may not be quite as strong.
The truth is, many of us say things to ourselves that we would never dream of saying to someone we love. We criticize ourselves, doubt ourselves, judge ourselves, and focus on our shortcomings far more than our strengths. We replay mistakes, question our abilities, and tell ourselves stories that keep us stuck.
In fact, if you talked to your friends the way you talk to yourself, would you still have any friends?
It's a tough question, but an important one.
Being impeccable with your word means paying attention to all your words, including the ones nobody else hears.
It means speaking to yourself with truth instead of criticism. With compassion instead of condemnation. With encouragement instead of defeat.
That doesn't mean pretending everything is perfect or avoiding difficult truths. In fact, being impeccable with your word requires honesty. But there's a big difference between honest self-reflection and relentless self-criticism.
One helps you grow.
The other keeps you stuck.
Another area where I see people struggling with this agreement is in the promises they make to themselves.
Think about how often you've said things like:
"I'm going to start exercising."
"I'm going to go to bed earlier."
"I'm going to write the book."
"I'm going to start the business."
"I'm going to make time for my health."
And then... you don't.
Now, please hear me. This isn't about perfection. Life happens. We all miss the mark sometimes.
But when we repeatedly make commitments to ourselves and then fail to follow through, something important begins to happen.
We stop trusting ourselves.
Every broken promise chips away at our confidence.
Every commitment we abandon sends ourselves a message that our word doesn't really matter.
And eventually, we begin doubting our ability to do the very things we're capable of doing.
That's why keeping your word to yourself is so important.
It builds self-trust. It builds confidence. And it strengthens the belief that you are someone who follows through.
This week, I want to challenge you to pay attention to both the words you speak and the promises you make.
Notice how you talk to yourself.
Notice when you're being critical, judgmental, or harsh.
Notice when you're making commitments you don't intend to keep.
Then ask yourself:
"Is this true?"
"Is this loving?"
"Is this helping me become the person I want to be?"
Because being impeccable with your word isn't just about integrity with others.
It's about integrity with yourself.
And that may be the most important relationship you'll ever have.
If you've never read The Four Agreements, I highly recommend it. And if you have read it before, perhaps this is your reminder to revisit it with fresh eyes. Sometimes the lessons we need most are the ones we've heard before, but are finally ready to live.
