For Every Yes, There's a Corresponding No

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” ~ Stephen Covey

Last week I wrote about the idea that how you spend your time is how you spend your soul. So as we continue through this series, I want to reemphasize something I shared last week and encourage you to become more aware of one simple but important truth:

For every yes, there's a corresponding no.

Every time you say yes to something, you're using time, energy, or attention that can no longer be given to something else. And because those resources are limited, I want you to ponder an important question: Are your yeses aligned with your values? Or are the things you value most often what you end up saying no to because of a reckless, reactive yes?

That's a question worth sitting with for a minute.

Because most of us would probably say we know what we value. We value our health. We value our families and relationships. We value meaningful work, personal growth, joy, connection, and whatever else makes our individual lives meaningful.

But knowing what you value and living in alignment with those values are two very different things.

And your calendar may be one of the most honest places to see the difference.

When Your Yeses Don't Match Your Values

Let's say you tell me your health is one of your highest values. I believe you. But then you repeatedly say yes to staying up late binge-watching a show and consequently say no to the sleep your body needs. You say yes to working through lunch and no to nourishing yourself well. You say yes to another meeting and cancel the doctor's appointment you've already rescheduled twice. Or you continually tell yourself you're too busy to exercise, meditate, rest, or practice any of the self-care habits you know help you feel your best.

Does that mean you don't value your health?

Of course not.

It means your daily choices aren't fully aligned with what you say you value.

The same thing happens in our relationships. You may genuinely say your spouse, children, family, or friends are the most important people in your life. But if you continually say yes to work after hours, yes to your phone while someone is talking to you, yes to one more obligation, and yes to everyone else's requests, what are you unintentionally saying no to?

Maybe you're saying no to dinner with your family. Maybe you're saying no to a conversation with your spouse or calling a friend you haven't talked to in months. Or perhaps you're physically there, but you've used so much of your mental and emotional energy elsewhere that you're saying no to being truly present with the people you love.

That's why this isn't simply a conversation about time.

It's a conversation about alignment.

What Does Your Health Need a Yes To?

Take a quick inventory of your health and energy right now.

What do you know helps you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally at your best? Maybe it's getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating well, meditating, spending time outside, taking breaks, going to your medical appointments, or simply having enough downtime to recharge.

Now look at how often those things actually receive a yes from you.

Self-care has a tendency to become the thing we squeeze in after everything else gets done. The problem, of course, is that everything else is rarely done. There's always another email to answer, another task to complete, another person who needs something.

So, if you're waiting until you "have time" to take care of yourself, you may be waiting a very long time.

Sometimes honoring your health requires saying no somewhere else. No to another commitment. No to staying up another hour. No to giving away the time you intentionally set aside for yourself.

And I know that can feel uncomfortable, especially if you're someone who is used to being dependable and available to everyone else. But remember, your no isn't necessarily selfish. Sometimes it's exactly what allows you to keep saying yes to the life you want to live.

What Do the People You Love Need a Yes To?

Now think about your relationships.

When was the last time you intentionally created quality time with someone you love? Not because there happened to be an opening on the calendar, but because you decided that relationship deserved a place on it.

Maybe your yes is a date night with your spouse, dinner with your family, a weekend with your kids, or coffee with a friend. But it doesn't always have to be something big. Sometimes it's sending a loving text in the middle of the day, making a phone call, expressing gratitude, putting your phone down when someone is talking, or simply giving someone your full attention.

Those small yeses matter.

In fact, some of the most meaningful parts of our lives are built through small moments of connection that would be very easy to miss if we're always rushing toward whatever is next.

Ask yourself: Are the people I say matter most getting the best of my time and energy, or simply what's left of it?

That's another question worth sitting with.

Start Choosing Your Yeses More Intentionally

This isn't about creating guilt over every poor choice you've made or every time your priorities have gotten out of alignment. We all have seasons when work needs more from us, our schedules get unusually full, or one area of life temporarily requires more attention than another.

The goal isn't perfect balance.

The goal is awareness and intentionality.

So this week, before you automatically say yes, pause. Think about what that yes will require from you and ask yourself what you may be saying no to in exchange.

Then ask:

Is this yes aligned with what I value most?

If it is, wonderful. Say yes and own that decision.

But if it isn't, give yourself permission to make a different choice.

Because when you begin intentionally saying yes to your health, your energy, the people you love, and the things that matter most, you'll inevitably have to say no to some other things.

And that's okay.

You aren't simply deciding how to spend your time. You're deciding how to spend your life.

So make sure your yeses reflect what and who you truly value.
