Letting Go of Tension by Living with Intention – Part III

This week is the last of our mini-series on letting go of tension by living with intention… And I am so excited to share these last three big ideas with you because these three are foundational game changers when it comes to regular self-care. Once again, just like the other concepts I’ve shared thus far, they are so simple, yet so profound and powerful. These three concepts, when utilized effectively, can help you implement a consistent self-care practice that will have you feeling more balanced and peaceful in your daily life no matter what you might be facing.

Now of course, the first two parts of this mini-series were all about incorporating small self-care activities into your life to help you eliminate symptoms of stress, anxiety, overwhelm, etc. But keep in mind that perhaps the best way to eliminate tension isn’t just to manage the symptoms, but rather, to be proactive instead of reactive. Which is why the three ideas I’ll be sharing with you here are truly about letting go of tension by living with intention from a very proactive stance. So, let’s get to it…   

Patterns – Identify patterns in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviors. Notice where you commonly carry stress in your body. Getting to know your patterns better will help you catch yourself when you start to slip into negative patterns that set you on a downward spiral. And likewise, learning what works for you will help you be intentional about establishing positive patterns.

Triggers – Understanding what triggers your feelings of stress and tension goes hand and hand with identifying patterns. Because the truth is, sometimes it’s the trigger that sets a pattern into motion. So, notice what triggers you into a state of stress or overwhelm. Knowledge is power. And again, on the flipside, notice when you are feeling super relaxed. What triggers positive emotion for you? Try using these things more often to relax you when you’re under pressure, feeling stressed or completely overwhelmed.  

Rhythms – Establishing a rhythm or consistent, predictable routine in your daily life can be comforting and highly beneficial. For example, a consistent and healthy eating, sleeping and exercise routine not only give our days structure but also ensure we are being consistent with health habits. Likewise, intentionally adding a self-care or personal growth regimen such as meditation, journaling or reading regularly reduces tension and increases our sense of calm.  

So, what are your patterns and triggers? Pay attention and make note. Notice times of day, energy levels, people, situations, etc. that may contribute to your patterns or triggers. Then create a list of self-care practices that you want to try. Decide how you can proactively incorporate them into your life’s rhythm to prevent you from feeling triggered or to eliminate an unwanted pattern. Set up a new routine for yourself to keep you living intentionally and practicing self-care. Because when you practice self-care regularly you empower yourself with a protective layer of stillness and strength that will help you handle whatever might come your way.
