Release Negative Emotions and Increase Positive Energy

This month we’ll be focusing on Energy because I want to help you understand just how important energy is to your overall happiness and success.

I’m fairly certain most people don’t take care to maintain near high enough levels of energy. The majority don’t even realize just how many different types of energy we carry. For most people, when they hear talk of energy, the first (and often only) thing they think about is physical energy or physical health. And yes, that is extremely important. However, that is only one facet of our energy that we must care for. So instead of kicking off this topic with that most common, physical energy (even though of course, improving our physical wellbeing is essential) I want to begin with something different that you might not even be aware of.

See, in addition to optimizing our physical energy, we must also nurture our mental, emotional, and spiritual energy.

Why is this so important? Well, because they all affect each other. And they all affect how well we are able to live our lives fully. Let me explain, beginning with emotional energy…

After all, there’s no denying that we have been through some very difficult times in the last few years. And many people are still hurting and struggling emotionally. There’s still a tremendous amount of sadness, worry and fear in our world. And when you are experiencing a high amount of fear or other negative emotions, it can be exhausting physically as well as mentally taxing. Can you relate? Think about a time when you were experiencing fear, anger, sadness, grief, guilt, shame, etc. How did that affect your physical energy or your ability to be mentally focused?

No doubt we’ve all experienced one of these downhill rollercoasters of emotions at some point in our lives. And I know it can be difficult to stay positive in difficult situations. So this is precisely why I want to start our series on energy by sharing three simple steps to release negative (low energy) emotions and maybe even get some joy back in your life. When you are able to shift from a low vibrational emotional energy to a high vibrational emotional energy, you may be surprised at how quickly it changes your physical and mental energy as well.

Releasing Negative Emotions:

  1. Give Yourself Permission to Feel - I will admit, I don’t always express my true emotions in front of others. Often, it’s simply because I strive to be a positive person and I know having negative emotions are not in my best interest. Sometimes it’s because I realize there is a time and place for that expression. And then other times, I use the excuse that I don’t have time to feel. Or I have to hold it all together for everyone else. But as you’ve heard me say before, being a role model also means modeling to others how to handle difficult times in a healthy way. It doesn’t mean you don’t ever struggle. Or that you can only have positive emotions. We are created with a range of emotions for a reason. There is a time and place for all of them. So, give yourself permission to feel all of the emotions you are experiencing.
  2. Acknowledge the True Emotion - This may seem similar to the above, but the act of acknowledging comes from your head, in your thoughts. Not from your heart, which is feeling. Often, we try to stay in our heads too much! We let our thoughts take us down the rabbit hole of avoidance, refusing to acknowledge the true emotion itself and somehow believing that we can think our way out of feeling. When in reality all we are doing is distracting ourselves to avoid feeling. So, once you’ve given yourself permission to feel… then you can acknowledge the true emotion and shine a light on it to see where it may be coming from. Sometimes, what seems obvious on the surface is not the real root. But when we acknowledge the true emotion, it opens the way to the correct path of healing.
  3. Release the Emotion - Now that you have opened your heart and mind to the emotion, it’s time to release it. This can be done in a variety of ways. Some of the more common ways are to journal about how you are feeling and what you can do that might make you feel better; talk to someone you trust, either personally or professionally; meditate or pray; get moving with a physical activity to release endorphins which can help you regulate your emotions on a physical level; or go for a walk in nature to breath the fresh air and be in gratitude for the beauty around you. Whatever you decide to do, start. Do it and then do it again, until you begin to feel the negative emotion begin to release.

You will be amazed at how effective these three simple steps can be in helping you release the negative emotions you are feeling and get some joy back in your life. I realize that this certainly may not solve the problem completely. Hell, it might not solve the problem at all! Sometimes that requires more work and sometimes there are circumstances that are out of our control. But these simple steps can help you cope through difficult times and in the process, improve your emotional energy, which no doubt, will help you live a happier (and more energetic) life overall!
