“You don’t have to be a “person of influence” to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they’ve taught me.” ~ Scott Adams
If you were to think about the people who have been role models to you in your life, I would be willing to bet that the majority of them never really knew they were your role model. So now ponder that for a minute… How many people then, have you likely been a role model to that you have no idea you’ve influenced? Kind of gives you chills, right? I mean, think about how you show up every single day of your life. What are you modeling to others? What energy are you giving out that others are absorbing? What habits or behaviors do you model that someone else is likely learning from you? What mindset or beliefs is someone picking up from you that are becoming their own? And maybe the most important question… Is the model you are being worth modeling?
You might think that no one is watching but I can promise you, someone is. The way you show up is role modeling the way for how others may show up. Which is why it’s so important to be intentional with your thoughts, words, and actions.
How you live your life every day, whether through adversity or even in positive situations where you have a chance to grow or level up, know that others you lead are watching and you have a responsibility to lead well by role modeling the way to them. For some, you may be their sole role model right now. You might be showing others how to be their best day to day by maintaining good habits and having strong values. Maybe you’re modeling ways to successfully navigate a particular situation, be productive or have courage. Whatever the case, I can just about guarantee that you are a role model to someone. So, it’s time to adapt the role model mindset and fully commit to being a role model worth modeling.
You get to choose every day how you will show up. You must talk the talk AND walk the walk because people notice. So be sure you are modeling what you want others to learn from you. Now I’m not saying that as a role model you must be perfect. That’s not the case at all. As a matter of fact, being human – mistakes and all – is what makes us not only relatable to others because we are being real, but it gives the people we model to, an extraordinary opportunity to learn how to handle adversity and struggle as well. Because the truth is, there will always be struggles and hard work in front of us.
Let’s take athletes for example… They may look effortless on the field or court, but they have to work hard for what they want, with no guarantee that they will win every time. Great athletes demonstrate hard work, commitment, leadership, and exemplary character. They know how to handle adversity and failure, as well as continually strive to be their best on the road to success. I think that’s part of what makes so many of them great role models.
This reminds me of one of my daughters who literally never stops working hard and training. Even on days she has team practice, she often comes home after and trains a little longer on her own. She rarely slacks off or lets up. Instead, she’s always challenging herself to level up. Talk about a role model… she certainly leads by example.
She inspires me to push myself to give my all every day too. And guess what, she has no idea that she’s modeling that for me! But the ripple effect is big. Because as her example reminds me to be my best, I can give my best to you and all the clients I serve. I will not let up… I will continue to level up, just like her. And hopefully as I model that to everyone I encounter, they in turn, will level up and keep the ripple going!
I will lead, I will challenge, and I will inspire every chance I get. I am far from perfect! But I know that if I want to role model the way for my family, my friends, and my clients… then I have to show up every day with the goal in mind that I’m going to be my best so that others can benefit and be inspired to do the same.
So, what about you? What do you want to model to others? Are your habits, behaviors, words, etc. modeling that? If not, then where do you need to level up? Challenge yourself to do it. You’ll be glad you did because remember… people are watching and whether you realize it or not, the role model they see is you. Be a role model worth modeling!
