Worry Lies - Part 1: The Worst Is Going to Happen

“There is only one cause of unhappiness: the false beliefs you have in your head—beliefs so widespread, so commonly held, that it never occurs to you to question them.” — Anthony de Mello

I once heard someone say that worry tells lies. And I’ve found that to be completely true, both in my own life and in the lives of my clients.

Worry has a sneaky way of whispering the same false stories over and over again, especially when we’re stepping into something new or uncertain.

In fact, worry tends to tell three big lies:
1.) The worst is going to happen.
2.) You can’t handle it.
3.) This will last forever.
If you listen closely to your inner chatter, I bet most of your worries boil down to one (or all) of these three. And when they take over, they bring fear, anxiety, and stress right along with them.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down each lie and giving you tools to replace them with truth, courage, and confidence.

Let’s start with the first one: “The worst is going to happen.”

The Lie: The Worst Is Going to Happen
This lie feeds on fear, the fear that something painful or catastrophic will occur if you take action, make a change, or step outside your comfort zone.

Sure, things might not go perfectly. Sometimes they even go sideways. But odds are, the worst isn’t going to happen, and even if it does, you’ll still be okay.
To help shift your perspective, try this simple but powerful “What If” exercise.

The “What If” Exercise

Step 1: Go down the rabbit hole.
Write down every “what if” your mind can come up with.
What if I fail?
What if people judge me?
What if this doesn’t work?
Let yourself list them all, even the dramatic ones.

Step 2: Get to the bottom and face it.
Ask yourself, “What if the worst really did happen?”
Most people discover that even at the very bottom, they’d survive it. They’d recover. They’d learn. They’d be okay.

Step 3: Flip the script.
Go back through your list and rewrite each “what if” with a positive, empowered answer:
What if I don’t know how to do this? → I can learn or ask for help.
What if no one supports me? → I’ll find my people or start on my own until they arrive.

This retrains your brain to focus on solutions instead of problems, building both confidence and courage.

Step 4: Imagine positive outcomes.
Now, create uplifting “what ifs”:
What if I succeed?
What if this turns out better than I expected?
What if this is the best thing that’s ever happened to me?

Feel that shift? That’s courage being activated.

Worry Is a Liar. Courage Is the Cure.
When you stop believing the lies worry tells, you start believing in yourself again.
You don’t have to know everything or have it all figured out; you just need to trust your ability to figure things out. That’s where real confidence grows.
