Can Courage Improve Productivity?

“You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fear.” ~ Sammy Davis, Jr.

You commit to a project or goal… maybe you’re excited about it or maybe it’s just one of those must do kind of things. Either way, as you get started, you feel something shift inside. Fear starts to creep in. Can I do this? Do I know what I’m doing? Am I good enough? And suddenly, every little excuse and distraction seem to work to keep you from making progress. You no longer know what your next action should be. You aren’t even clear anymore on the goal or how to get there. You procrastinate and you’re tired even thinking about it… Sound familiar?

Over the last few weeks, I’ve shared that if you want to be highly productive, it’s important to have clarity about what your goal is plus the plan for reaching it. As well as how important your mental and physical energy are to being productive. But if you don’t have courage to get going and to keep going when doubt, fear and failure get in your way – the other two don’t really matter.

See, without courage, no matter how much clarity you have about what you want or how much energy you have to do it, you won’t take action to get things done if your fear is greater than your commitment.

Interestingly enough, you might even find that your struggles with clarity, energy and productivity are actually courage issues. You don’t allow yourself to get clear because you’re afraid of making the wrong decision or failing at what you might decide to do. So, you allow procrastination and any little distraction or excuse to get in your way of taking action. But when you figure out how to be more confident, bold, and courageous by learning to overcome your most common fears and implement the concepts I’ve been sharing, you find that you can be more productive than you ever imagined.

So, where do you start? Well, start with knowing this… you don’t have to know it all, you just need to confidently and courageously believe in your ability to figure things out.

That one statement has been a complete game changer for myself and many of my clients. There’s something so very freeing in letting go of the false belief that you must know it all, be perfect and never fail. Besides, isn’t the greatest failure in the regret of never trying?

It’s time to stop letting fear take over your thoughts and actions. Just think, how much more productive and successful could you be if you had courage and focused on your commitment instead of your fear?

I want to challenge you to make a commitment to your dreams and goals. Write them down, post them somewhere that you can see them daily. Share them with others. (Social sharing is a great way to hold yourself accountable while also getting support and encouragement.) And when you falter or fail, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and re-commit again and again. Productivity is key to success, but COURAGE is at the heart of it all…
