To Persist or to Persevere… That Is the Question

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” ~ Albert Einstein

People often use the words persistence and perseverance interchangeably.

But I think there’s an important difference between the two. And understanding that difference can completely change how you approach challenges, goals, relationships, and growth.

Because sometimes what looks like “commitment” is actually just staying stuck.

If You Keep Using the Same Ingredients…

One of the analogies I love sharing with clients is this:

If you keep putting the same ingredients into your cake… you’ll keep getting the same cake.

Seems obvious, right?

But think about how often we do this in life.

We keep thinking the same thoughts.
Making the same choices.
Avoiding the same hard conversations.
Using the same strategies.

And then we wonder why nothing changes.

If you want a different result, eventually something has to shift. (You need different ingredients.)

When Persistence Stops Serving You

Now don’t get me wrong - persistence can absolutely be valuable.

There are times when sticking with something is exactly what’s needed.

But persistence becomes a problem when you’re repeatedly doing the same thing without growth, change, or progress.

And honestly, I think a lot of people get trapped there.

They stay in unhealthy relationships, hoping things will magically improve. They remain in jobs they hate for years while telling themselves things will get better someday. They keep repeating the same patterns while slowly becoming more frustrated, discouraged, or resentful.

Not because they lack strength…

But because they’ve confused persistence with progress.

And those are not the same thing.

Perseverance Is Different

Perseverance has a different energy to it.

Perseverance isn’t about stubbornly repeating the same action over and over.

It’s about continuing to move forward while adapting, learning, growing, and solving problems along the way.

When you persevere:

  • You face obstacles head-on
  • You learn from mistakes
  • You make adjustments
  • You stay committed to the goal, even when the path changes

That’s why perseverance is such a powerful character trait.

Because perseverance says:

“I may not know exactly how yet… but I’ll figure it out.”

Let’s Use a Real-Life Example

Imagine someone who feels completely stuck in a job they hate.

With persistence, they simply keep enduring it.

Day after day. Year after year. Nothing changes because they’re continuing the exact same pattern.

But perseverance looks different… Perseverance says:

  • Maybe I need to learn a new skill
  • Maybe I need to take a risk
  • Maybe I need to step outside my comfort zone
  • Maybe I need to ask for help
  • Maybe I need to start believing something better is possible for me

See the difference?

Persistence keeps repeating the same experience.

Perseverance keeps moving toward a better one.

Courage Is Often the Missing Ingredient

Here’s what I’ve noticed…

Sometimes people aren’t actually lacking discipline or work ethic.

They’re lacking the courage to make a change.

Because change feels uncomfortable.

Trying something new feels risky.

And growth often requires us to let go of what’s familiar, even when what’s familiar isn’t making us happy.

But if you want a different outcome, you must be willing to do something differently.

That’s true in almost every area of life.

Know Which Traits Serve You

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been talking a lot about character traits. And this is another important part of that conversation because not every behavior that looks strong is actually serving you.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is pivot.

Learn.

Adjust.

Grow.

And persevere forward with wisdom instead of simply staying stuck in repetition.

So, take some time to reflect on the character traits you’re trying to build.

Ask yourself:

  • Are these traits helping me become my best self?
  • Are my actions aligned with growth?
  • Am I truly moving forward… or just repeating familiar patterns?

Those are powerful questions. And the answers can change everything.

Your Challenge This Week

Take an honest look at one area of your life where you feel stuck. Then ask yourself:

Am I persisting… or am I persevering?

Because there is a difference.

Persistence repeats.

Perseverance evolves.

And sometimes the breakthrough you’re looking for begins the moment you’re willing to try a different approach.
