Worry Lies - Part 2

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows. It empties today of its strength.” ~ Corrie ten Boom

Today, I am continuing our series on the lies that worry tells us, where those lies often come from and most importantly, how to overcome them so you can have courage to step boldly into your future.

Three of the most common lies are:

  1. The worst is going to happen.
  2. You can’t handle it.
  3. This will last forever.

If you missed part one, of this series, where I discussed Lie #1, you can CLICK HERE to read it.

Let’s take the second lie now, “You can’t handle it.” This worry feeds off of the fear that the process of doing something will be painful or too difficult in some way. It often stems from believing that we are not good enough, smart enough, capable enough, strong enough -whatever enough. That is a lie! But I'm here to tell you the truth...

Without me even knowing you – I believe you can handle it! Why, because as humans, we are resilient. We are stronger, smarter and – MORE – than we realize we are. We are enough! But too often we focus on our limitations rather than our strengths.

It’s time to start believing in your abilities. Or at the very least, believing in your ability to figure things out. Sure, you may not know how to do something or be masterful at a skill. And no, the outcome of anything you do may not turn out exactly as you like. But you have within you, the heart of courage and the ability to learn. Not to mention, many other strengths and abilities that can no doubt, help you get to where you want to be. Think about it. I’m sure you’ve had other struggles or worries that you have overcome. I’m sure you’ve had difficult projects or situations that you have navigated through. You can handle it; you just need to focus on your strengths and not your limitations.

Start by making a list of skills, knowledge, abilities and strengths you have that could benefit you in handling whatever it is you are worrying about. And don’t forget to include the help or support you know you can get if you need it. Yes, when you really feel like you can’t handle something, then that heart of courage might just need to be courageous enough to ask for help. See, part of the lie is that we have to handle things on our own. We do not. We just need to be courageous enough to ask for help. And we need to believe in and work from our strengths.

The next tool I want to give you for finding the truth amongst the lie of worry is to utilize the power of positive questions to direct your focus and give you courage.

Remember I mentioned in the last post that asking a question and giving a positive answer could be beneficial to creating solutions? Let’s take this exercise a step farther. Because sometimes the real key is in the questions you ask, because questions have the power to direct your focus.

Just start with our lie, how different would your thoughts be if you turned this lie into a question. Instead of, “You can’t handle it.” Say “How can I handle this?” Your mind immediately starts looking for a solution. Or to add to the practice above, to ask, "What strength or support do I have that could help me handle this?" So, depending on what you might be worrying about, the questions you can ask yourself will direct your mental focus and will ultimately determine your next actions. Creating more courage, eliminating anxiety and moving you into action.

To sum this all up, when worry starts telling you the lie that you can’t handle it, focus on and work from your strengths rather than your limitations. Don't be afraid to ask for help. And ask powerful questions that direct your focus and boost your courage. These tools will move you into finding your truth and taking action to handle anything that comes your way.
