“Being able to selectively forget about the things in your life that don’t serve you might just be the most freeing feeling in the world.”
I was recently coaching a client through a session on defining her ideal identity and it reminded me of an old show I watched years ago. It was about a woman who had amnesia and was trying to figure out who she really was. As she began to rediscover herself, what she found was that she didn’t really like who she had been. So, she decided that if she was going to have to relearn who she was, she might as well learn to be who she really wanted to be. She chose to redefine herself, create new beliefs and make some changes that of course, lead to her becoming a better, happier and more successful person then she had ever been.
I still remember thinking, as I sat there watching the show, that in a way she was kind of lucky. Don’t get me wrong, there would be many downfalls to having amnesia, like not knowing any of your friends or family. But wouldn't it be nice if you could just forget the past and reinvent yourself into whoever you wanted to be? And then I thought, "Why not?" We all have that capability to choose our thoughts, yet for some reason, we hold on to the misery of past negative experiences, old limiting beliefs, disempowering stories and the fear of not being able to change our life.
So, as I continued to think more about this, I thought, why not utilize some “Self-Selective Amnesia”? And no, I’m not referring to true Dissociative Amnesia which is a psychological condition commonly referred to as Selective Amnesia. I like to think of my concept of Self-Selective Amnesia as giving yourself permission to forget past mistakes or regrets in order to get on with your life. To rediscover the parts of you that you love and to redefine yourself based on the person you know you have the potential to be. To forget the old beliefs and stories that hold you back so you can become your ideal self.
Think about it, what if you could start with a clean slate? Would you create your new self differently? What would you change if you could define your ideal identity? Maybe you wouldn’t change a thing… That’s cool too because it means you’ve learned and already let go of your past. But I’m willing to bet that there are probably a few old stories or limiting beliefs that do keep you from moving forward occasionally. It’s time to forget about the parts of you that you don’t like and redefine who you want to be now.
So, get on with it! Let Self-Selective Amnesia clear out all that no longer serves you. Start new and redefine who you will choose to be... then step into that ideal identity and don't look back.
