How Are Your Battles Defining You?

"Our character isn't defined by the battles we win or lose, but by the battles we dare to fight."  ~ Robert Beatty

What battles are you fighting in your life right now? Are you still fighting old battles from the past? Fighting with others? Or fighting an internal battle?

We all have battles we fight in our lives. Some are external - with other people. For example, a power struggle at work or a court battle with a spouse, over a divorce. (Even holding a grudge over a fight between siblings from the past can stir up new battles every time you interact with each other.)

Some battles are not of our choosing - the battle for your life when facing a life threatening disease like cancer or maybe having to battle back from an injury, after having an accident. Sure we can choose whether or not to fight them. But we don't necessarily choose them to be in our lives.

And then of course, there are the internal battles we fight. The battles with our ego and our self limiting beliefs over whether we are good enough to reach our goals. The battles we fight every time fear rears its head when we are pushed out of our comfort zone. Or even the battle for willpower as we attempt to change bad habits for good. Most of us fight internal battles a whole lot more than external. In addition, deep within every external battle, there is most likely an internal battle as well.

We can't always control the outcome of external battles but we can control the outcome of the internal battles we fight. And it is these battles that we must dare to fight most. These are the battles that define our character. And it is in fighting these battles that we can overcome all things. In fighting our internal battles with limiting beliefs and fears, we can fight the battles that are not of our choosing, with courage, strength and hope. Or even better yet, realize that we often don't need to fight the external battles at all but rather that we can put our ego aside and show up with love, kindness and peace.

So I want to challenge you to make a decision today that you will not let the outcome of the external battles you are fighting in your life define you. They may be battles from your past, present or even those you are fearing in your future. But you do not have to be a victim of those battles. Release any hold their outcome may have on you and instead dig deeper and see what you are really fighting internally. How will you let your internal battle define your character? Be strong, be courageous, be kind and above all, whatever your battle is... be positive, have hope and believe in yourself.
