"You must have control of the authorship of your own destiny. The pen that writes your life story must be held in your own hand." - Irene C. Kassorla
Everyone has a story. For some it might feel like a mystery, a fairy tale, a drama, a love story, fiction, or fact. But perhaps what's most important...Is it holding you back?
I repeatedly hear "stories" from people about why they are like they are and why it has kept them stuck. They refer to all this as the "reasons" why they are stuck or struggling, why they haven't made changes or havenât succeeded at their lifeâs dreams. But basically, what they really are - are the excuses that they've become comfortable with so that they don't have to step out of their comfort zone and change.
So I ask you, do you often find yourself saying things like:Â
"Oh that's just the way I am.â Â
"That's how I was raised."Â
"My parents were this way, therefore, I'm..."Â
Do you find yourself launching into a big "story" when something doesn't work out ...
âBalance is not something you find, itâs something you create.â ~Jana Kingsford
I had an opportunity recently to sit in on a group coaching call that one of my colleagues was hosting. He was teaching a segment on the concept of balance. Which happens to be a subject I love discussing because Iâve discovered in my years of coaching that most people struggle with balance more than they realize and it is often because they donât understand it for themselves. Balance is so needed in our busy lives and yet so misunderstood.
It was interesting to hear his take on the concept. As he talked about defining balance and customizing our routines to fit, I couldnât have agreed more!
If youâve ever heard me speak on the topic of creating your ideal life, you know I think words like balance, success and even happiness must be defined by each of us for ourselves. When you base them on someone elseâs ideals, you usually end up feeling discontent. Yes, you can have it all, but you must know what...
"I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for - perfection is God's business."Â Â ~ Michael J. Fox
I have a confession to make⌠(although if you've been in my community for any length of time, you probably already know this about me) I am a recovering perfectionist. Yep, I have been trapped in the claws of perfectionism a lot throughout my lifetime. I donât really remember exactly when or how it started. But I certainly can remember many occasions when it held me back from peace, happiness, and even success in my life.
So, itâs not only easy for me to spot a fellow perfectionist, but when I do meet someone who is suffering with this debilitating issue, it breaks my heart. Because I know all too well the pain that perfectionism can cause.
What about you? Do you suffer from perfectionism? Is being a perfectionist keeping you from fulfilling your true potential and living your best life? If your answer is even a tiny bit of a yes, then I have g...
âThe eyes are the windows to your soul.â - William Shakespeare
It has been said that the eyes are the window to your soul. Yet unfortunately, so many people wear masks to hide who they are that no one ever gets to see their true beautiful soul. And sadly, not only does no one else get to know the real them, but they often go through life wondering who they themselves are because they have lost touch with their own selves from spending so much of their lives wearing a mask and pretending to be someone they are not.
Has this ever been you? What mask are you wearing?
You may have begun wearing a mask for protection but who are you really protecting yourself from - the world around you or your own self? Are you trying to hide who you are or how you feel? Maybe you feel like youâre not enough as you are or wonât be accepted as you are. That can be tough, and I understand that sometimes it really does feel safer to put on a mask and pretend to be something you are not. But life was no...
" - it's possible." ~ Les Brown
Next week my youngest daughter will graduate from high school, and as I'm sure many of you know embarking on a new journey can be a fearful experience. I decided that this week, I wanted to set the stage for the words of Les Brown to speak to anyone experiencing the closing of one chapter and beginning of another. So Iâm giving up my writing space and time with you this week to Les Brown, because what he says, I could not say any better myself.
Although you may have heard or read this before, I can promise you, it's worth the read again. Therefore, as a little something different, below is the rest of the speech that inspired me to use today's quote. Itâs simple really⌠â - itâs possibleâ speaks volumes to me. Often shouting out, above the noise and chatter of fear, especially when Iâm embarking on a journey to make a dream a reality. Loud and clear. It's possible! And guess what, your dreams are possible too. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
..."Definition of Insanity - Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." ~ Albert Einstein
The action of being persistent can often mean you are doing the same thing over and over. Sometimes that can be good but sometimes, not so much. Take for example the analogy IÂ love to give my clients: If you keep putting the same ingredients in your cake, you will keep getting the same cake. If you want a different cake, you have to put in different ingredients. When being persistent with something, it's important to know when enough is enough and you need to try something new to reach your goal. Especially when that cake you're making is really not the cake you want to be eating at all! đ
The illusion that the ability to persist is always a virtue has caused people to stay in toxic relationships with people they donât respect, put up with jobs they hate, and generally just continue to perform the same painful action over and over again, in hopes that it will
..."Our character isn't defined by the battles we win or lose, but by the battles we dare to fight." Â ~ Robert Beatty
What battles are you fighting in your life right now? Are you still fighting old battles from the past? Fighting with others? Or fighting an internal battle?
We all have battles we fight in our lives. Some are external - with other people. For example, a power struggle at work or a court battle with a spouse, over a divorce. (Even holding a grudge over a fight between siblings from the past can stir up new battles every time you interact with each other.) Â
Some battles are not of our choosing - the battle for your life when facing a life threatening disease like cancer or maybe having to battle back from an injury, after having an accident. Sure we can choose whether or not to fight them. But we don't necessarily choose them to be in our lives. Â
And then of course, there are the internal battles we fight. The battles with our ego and our self limiting beliefs ove...
