"The will toĀ persevereĀ is often the difference between failure and success." Ā ~David SarnoffĀ
When you hear the word persistence, what do you think of? For me, I like the way Josh Shipp describes it. He says, "Perseverance is stubbornness with a purpose." At first read, that is funny, right? But it also proves a valuable point. That sometimes what one person sees as a negative trait, another can see as a great quality.
I remember when IĀ was a school counselor and I'd help students with their scholarship applications. Often they were asked to describe themselves. So I'd give them the directive to make a list of their qualities. Many struggled and they'd say things like, my parents think I'm stubborn, my friends think I'm bossy, my teachers think I'mā¦
As for myself personally, I've been called stubborn on more than one occasion too. So now I know, that just means I'm persistent. š Which, in the right context, can be a great quality. Being stubborn from an egocentric place is not a...
"Definition of Insanity - Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." ~ Albert Einstein
The action of being persistent can often mean you are doing the same thing over and over. Sometimes that can be good but sometimes, not so much. If you want a different cake, you have to put in different ingredients. When being persistent with something, it's important to know when enough is enough and you need to try something new to reach your goal. Especially when that cake you're making is really not the cake you want to be eating at all! š
The illusion that the ability to persist is always a virtue has caused people to stay in toxic relationships with people they donāt respect, put up with jobs they hate, and generally just continue to perform the same painful action over and over again, in hopes that it will
..."Strength of character isnāt always about how much you can handle before you break, itās also about how much you can handle after youāve broken." ā unknown
How do you show up in the face of adversity? Last week I had a conversation with a woman about her life and it shocked me. Her story of struggle was hard to imagine. Sheās been through so much in her life and yet sheās warm, loving and kind. Sheās resilient, faith-filled and strong. Even in spite of all that sheās going through. I would have never imagined she was in the middle of a lifelong storm.
The truth is, itās easy to show positive character traits when everything is going good in your life but sometimes the best way to truly know a person is to see how they show up in the face of adversity.
Which is why I want to take our conversation from last week (about how easy it is to assess someoneās character traits by observing their actions) a step farther and add that how someone shows up in the face of adversity really s
