Don't Just Make The List - Live By It!

“Words are just words until you put them into action. Then they can become the character traits that you live by.” ~ Michelle Weimer

Today’s Masterful Mindset is the last in our mini series on Character. I hope that you’ve gotten some clarity about the character traits you most wish to possess.

If you’ve been following along the last few weeks, then by now you should have a great list started. But it’s not just about making a list of words, it’s about living by those words.

So, if you don’t already have a plan in place for how you will practice those character traits regularly, in order to begin to make them a powerful part of who you are and how you will show up in the world, you’re in luck today.

To end this series, I want to give you a practice that will help you keep those character traits front and center in your mind, which in turn will help you begin to look for opportunities to exhibit them more regularly. (Plus I'm going to give you free access to the app I use for t

Own Your Personality Types - Change Your Character Traits

“Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open.” ~ Elmer G. Letterman

This week we’re talking about personality types and owning who you are but also showing up however you want to be.

In the early 70’s Carl Jung developed a theory about personality types. Maybe you remember taking a personality test somewhere throughout your life, to identify your personality types. Perhaps you were an ISFP or an EITJ or somewhere in between… it doesn’t matter. They are all good in their own way. No one personality type is better than the other. Unless of course you perceive it that way. So, if there’s something about your personality type you don’t like, then let me tell you how to change the character traits that go with your personality so you can show up as your best self.

Many believe strongly that personality types can’t be changed, yet some theories say they can. I’m not here to argue that… But I do want to say that I believe that although a personality test may put y...

To Persist or to Persevere, that is the Question…

"Definition of Insanity - Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." ~ Albert Einstein

The action of being persistent can often mean you are doing the same thing over and over. Sometimes that can be good but sometimes, not so much. Take for example the analogy I love to give my clients: If you keep putting the same ingredients in your cake, you will keep getting the same cake. If you want a different cake, you have to put in different ingredients. When being persistent with something, it's important to know when enough is enough and you need to try something new to reach your goal. Especially when that cake you're making is really not the cake you want to be eating at all! 😉

The illusion that the ability to persist is always a virtue has caused people to stay in toxic relationships with people they don’t respect, put up with jobs they hate, and generally just continue to perform the same painful action over and over again, in hopes that it will

How Do You Show Up In The Face Of Adversity?

"Strength of character isn’t always about how much you can handle before you break, it’s also about how much you can handle after you’ve broken." – unknown

How do you show up in the face of adversity? Last week I had a conversation with a woman about her life and it shocked me. Her story of struggle was hard to imagine. She’s been through so much in her life and yet she’s warm, loving and kind. She’s resilient, faith-filled and strong. Even in spite of all that she’s going through. I would have never imagined she was in the middle of a lifelong storm.

The truth is, it’s easy to show positive character traits when everything is going good in your life but sometimes the best way to truly know a person is to see how they show up in the face of adversity.

Which is why I want to take our conversation from last week (about how easy it is to assess someone’s character traits by observing their actions) a step farther and add that how someone shows up in the face of adversity really s

Are Your Actions Congruent with Your Character?

"The truth of your character is expressed through the choice of your actions." ~ Steve Maraboli

Father’s Day is coming up so of course, it always makes me think about my dad. He passed away a few years ago and I miss him dearly. He was a man of great character and his actions always reflected that character. He had integrity. He was honest, hardworking, fair, reliable, responsible, loved his family deeply and he always showed resilience, perseverance and humility in the face of adversity.

Thinking about him, inspired me to share a new Masterful Mindset Series with you on Character. So for the next few weeks, please come along with me and invite others to join us, as we will be focusing on character. Because truly, I think we can all use a little tune-up in this area from time to time.

Character Traits are all the aspects of a person's behavior and attitudes that make up that person's personality. (Think “descriptive adjectives” here.) Everyone has character traits, both good and...

Courage, Mindset and Character

"When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future."   ~Queen Elizabeth II

How do you handle difficulty and defeat? If you have a growth mindset, it’s likely that you see it as nothing more than a roadblock on your path to success or a learning opportunity as you keep pushing forward toward your dreams. However, if you have a fixed mindset, then you may see it as a reason to quit and give in to the seemingly paralyzing effects of failure.

In addition to your mindset though, a lot can also be learned about a person's character if you observe them during difficult times. They will show you their victim side or their victor side. They will show you their pessimism or their optimism. Their kindness or their bitterness... And as the quote says, those who are courageous will show that they are strong and courageous, in their actions and determination. While all too often, those who are afra...

How Are Your Battles Defining You?

"Our character isn't defined by the battles we win or lose, but by the battles we dare to fight."  ~ Robert Beatty

What battles are you fighting in your life right now? Are you still fighting old battles from the past? Fighting with others? Or fighting an internal battle?

We all have battles we fight in our lives. Some are external - with other people. For example, a power struggle at work or a court battle with a spouse, over a divorce. (Even holding a grudge over a fight between siblings from the past can stir up new battles every time you interact with each other.)

Some battles are not of our choosing - the battle for your life when facing a life threatening disease like cancer or maybe having to battle back from an injury, after having an accident. Sure we can choose whether or not to fight them. But we don't necessarily choose them to be in our lives.

And then of course, there are the internal battles we fight. The battles with our ego and our self limiting beliefs ove...
