Worry Lies - The Truth

“The truth will set you free” ~ John 8:32

As we come to the end of this series on the lies that worry tells us, it’s important to note that worry and fear are two different things. Sometimes fear creates worry and sometimes, worry can create fear. For example, the fear of the unknown can cause us to worry about the future. And worrying about the future can stoke the fire of fear, making it grow out of control and keeping us from ever stepping forward into the future we want to create.

I could go on and on about the differences between worry and fear but that's a much bigger topic, so I won’t get into that today. For now, just keep in mind that there will always be things we fear. And that’s okay. True fear isn’t always within our control, and it is sometimes necessary in order to keep us safe. But worry is within our control and it rarely, if ever serves a purpose. So, if we don’t want our fear to paralyze us and hold us back, then it is to our benefit to keep worry quiet or better yet, eliminate it when we can. This is why knowing the truth and not letting worry lie to us is so very important. Which leads us to the last post in this series...

But first, if you missed any of the previous posts, feel free to click on each lie below to learn more about where those lies often come from and most importantly, how to overcome them so you can have courage to step boldly into your future.

The three big lies worry tells us are:

  1. The worst is going to happen.
  2. You can’t handle it.
  3. This will last forever.

So, if I’ve already discussed each of the three lies, what’s left? That's simple...

THE TRUTH.

How can you move from these lies and free yourself with the truth?

One of my favorite exercises to do with clients is have them create what I call “Truth Statements”. These are statements that are truthful to you and support you in moving into the direction of a positive mindset. Now notice that I say, moving into a positive direction. Let me explain this a little further by using our first lie one more time. “The worst is going to happen.”

To say the complete opposite, “This is going to be great!” might not feel like truth. And if it doesn’t feel right, that’s a signal to your ego to protect you, which takes you back to the worry and the fear. However, if you can create a statement that is truth for you and feels like truth for you, then the worry and fear start to decrease. So, find your truth! This might sound something like, “No matter what happens, I can get through this.” Or “No matter what happens, I will be okay.”

The second lie, “You can’t handle it.” comes from a deep seeded belief that you are not enough or from a past experience that was difficult or failed. So, to change that to a new truth, it’s going to require that you trust and believe in yourself – even if just a little. And I know that for some people that can be difficult because it means you must let go of those deep seeded negative beliefs. But remember, we are working to move into a positive mindset here so even though you may not know it all or be the most skilled, remember, you don’t have to be. You just need to believe in your ability to figure things out. Be courageous enough to take action. And be resilient enough to keep moving forward no matter what. Let your new truth statement come from your belief that you are enough. Even if that means the new truth is, “I can figure this out.” Or “I can get help.”

And the last lie… “This will last forever.” I believe might be the silliest lie of all because we are all on a journey. And even if by chance a situation doesn’t change, you will change. So, you will never stay stuck in one place forever, unless you choose it. You’ve experienced struggles along your journey before and you’ve most likely come out on the other side stronger and wiser. As easily as you say it could last forever, you could also remind yourself of the saying, “This too shall pass.” Let that be your new truth statement. Or create one of your own. But whatever you do, don’t choose to stay stuck by believing this lie.

Now go and be courageous. Don’t let the lies of worry hold you back from going after the life you desire any longer. Even during times of uncertainty or struggle, you can choose to believe the lies worry tells you or you can choose your own truth. You can choose to panic or you can choose hope. You can choose to shut down or you can choose to level up.
